Iran Group of Surveyors (IGS) is the first entirely Iranian inspection firm to have become established and begun work in the area of ship and cargo surveys.  It was established in 1980 as a private company and gradually expanded.  During the war between Iran and Iraq the largest part of ship and cargo damages was surveyed by IGS; and non-Iranian insurance companies and P&I Clubs used IGS reports as the basis of their decision-makings and for estimating damages/losses.  Presently IGS is primarily engaged in qualitative and quantative inspection and surveys of goods, both liquids and solids, such as oil products, chemicals and petrochemicals as well as industrial inspections including supervision over the construction of industrial facilities, inspections of cranes and lifting equipment in general, oil and gas industries, industrial plants and factories,   on-shore and off-shore installations and surveys/inspections of ship damages.
The section that deals with cargo inspection deals extensively with determining the conformity of cargoes and products with specifications and the relevant standards, operating on the basis of a permit that IGS has received from the Institute of Standards and Industrial Research of Iran.  By doing so it has played a key role in Iran’s internal and international trade, and continues to do so.  For example, in 2006-07 IGS inspected more than 2,000 import and export cargoes (oil, petrochemicals etc).

The Industrial Inspection Department, has been granted a 1st Class Certificate in technical inspections by the Deputy for Planning and Strategic Supervision of the Presidency (previous Planning and Management Organization) and several other valid permits by state organizations such as Institute of Standards and Industrial Research of Iran, as well as companies subsidiary to the Oil Ministry, Ministry of Power, Tavanir etc.  This Department  has been and continues to be very active in supervision over the construction of oil industry plants, gas industrial units, petrochemical plants, as well as in testing and inspecting cranes and lifting equipment and transportation facilities, third party technical inspections of industrial projects, design and drawing approvals and offering consultation services.

Presently IGS has a staff of about 100 people of various areas of expertise working in branches situated in the major ports of Iran such as Bandar Abbas, Bandar Imam, Kharg, Neka and Anzali.  It offers a great service to the country’s trade and plays a most significant role in its industry and industrial development.  Moreover, working in cooperation with Inspectorate of UK, through a joint venture in Iran, IGS provides services of the highest standard at an international level.
Furthermore, for the past 10 years IGS has been providing classification services and official inspection of vessels on behalf of Port and Shipping Organization, as regards those vessels that sail under the Iranian flag.
